Callaway Furniture - History - Since 1947

Callaway's Story
Paul Callaway began his business by selling storm doors and windows from his garage and station wagon. Paul worked at DuPont, in Seaford, until he was established enough to begin his own business. This was in the late 1940’s. His home improvement business continued to grow as he added flooring and wall tile to his services.

About 1958, Paul built a store on Rt. 13 just north of Harrington. That building is still the main showroom of Callaway Furniture. The family consisted of his wife Phyllis, and his three children Bob, Donna and Beverly. They moved into a new home connected to the store.

How We Began Selling Furniture
Paul Callaway, sitting in his new empty store, had a salesman stopped in and asked Paul to sell a few sofas for him. Paul agreed and the sofas kept selling. Beverly stated, “We all said if that salesman had been selling tractors, we might all be wearing green and yellow today!

Throughout the years, Paul continued to have incredible drive and love for his work. He soon added awning manufacturers to the flooring and furniture business. Paul’s son Bob began learning the business at an early age. He took the responsibility of installing floor covering and hanging awnings. They were fortunate enough to have had many great and longtime employees, which helped the business flourish.

Bob took a break from the family business and spent some time in California, where he owned his own business and attended flight school. When Bob returned, he worked side-by-side with his father. The family continued to be a part of the business. Bob’s son Jon grew up in the business and is considered an expert in flooring and awnings. Bob’s wife Penny added retail expertise to the growing business.

Paul Callaway was taken in 2006. This left quite a void in our lives. The family pulled together to help Bob with the business that Paul had left behind. Beverly, Bob’s sister, left a teaching career in Florida to help with the business.
